The Pope Talks Tennis at the Vatican; Cardio Tennis Debuts to Coaches in Italy

During the qualifying tennis tournament for the Italian Open in Rome in early May, the Italian Tennis Federation (FIT) hosted a special session at the Vatican with Pope Francis, who used the encounter to speak about sports and tennis as an “educational experience.” The audience with the Pope was the opening session for the 2nd Annual International Tennis Coaches Symposium.

Hundreds of Tennis Facilities Join Nationwide ‘Try Tennis Free’ Campaign

Throughout the month of May, the tennis industry-supported “Try Tennis Free” campaign will bring non-players and former players into the sport at any of at least 1,800 participating facilities nationwide. Consumers, particularly new or returning players, can visit PlayTennis.com or TryTennisFree.com to find local facilities and tennis teaching professionals offering a free introductory session, lesson, clinic or other event.

Sign Up to Participate in ‘Try Tennis Free’ Campaign

Throughout the month of May, consumers will be encouraged to get out onto the tennis courts through the “Try Tennis Free” campaign. Managed by the Tennis Industry Association (TIA), Try Tennis Free has the support and partnership of the two main tennis-teaching groups in the U.S.—the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) and the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA)—along with the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA), the national governing body of tennis.

The tennis industry is rallying around a campaign throughout the month of May to get more people playing tennis. The “Try Tennis Free” promotion seeks to have tennis providers and facilities offer a free introductory session, lesson, clinic or other event to help draw consumers into the sport.

Tennis Summit Addresses Major Challenges and Concerns

A high-powered lineup of tennis, sports and business executives shared their insights, issues, and concerns at the 2015 Tennis Industry Association (TIA) Tennis Summit, held March 17-18 in conjunction with the BNP Paribas Open men’s and women’s professional tennis tournament in Indian Wells, Calif. The event was held at the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa in nearby Rancho Mirage.

SFIA Applauds Bipartisan Introduction of PHIT Act

Representatives Charles Boustany (R-LA) and Ron Kind (D-WI) of the powerful House Ways & Means Committee have introduced the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act.  The PHIT Act would allow consumers to use their pre-tax medical accounts to get reimbursed for physical activity expenses that complement a healthy lifestyle, such as school sports fees, sports league registration fees, health club dues, entry fees for road races, and other sport-specific equipment purchases.
