The USTA Foundation, the national charitable organization of the USTA, held its inaugural USTA Foundation Los Angeles Pro-Am on November 8 and raised more than $150,000. The USTA Foundation provides grants for programs nationwide for under-resourced youth; individuals with disabilities; and wounded, ill and injured service members, veterans and their families.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced three moves for the executive staff at the new USTA National Campus, which is being constructed in Orlando, Fla. Kurt Kamperman will become Chief Executive, Community Tennis and USTA National Campus. Craig Morris has been hired as General Manager, Community Tennis and Youth Tennis. Tim Cass has been hired as General Manager, USTA National Campus.
Plans for “Rally the Family,” a new industry-wide campaign announced during the US Open that is designed to bring more players into the sport of tennis, continue to be refined in preparation for testing in select markets this fall and winter. The new family tennis initiative is expected to be rolled out to consumers in March.
The USTA is offering 100% funding to add 36- and 60-foot playing lines for school tennis programs, which will make it easier for organizers and teachers to offer tennis at school, and make it easier for students to excel at the game.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has announced a broad professional development initiative that will help prepare the next generation of tennis providers including tennis professionals, coaches, and administrators. Titled USTA University (USTAU), the program will offer curricula in tennis, management, hospitality and sport science.
David Haggerty was elected ITF President at the ITF Annual General Meeting in Santiago, Chile on Friday. The 58-year old from the United States succeeds Francesco Ricci Bitti, whose 16-year term as ITF President ends today. Haggerty will serve a four-year term from 2015-19.
A “Rally the Family” campaign designed to bring more players into the sport of tennis was unveiled by the USTA and TIA at the 8th Annual TIA Tennis Forum, held in New York City during the 2015 US Open. The new family tennis initiative will be rolled out to consumers in March, said Kurt Kamperman, the USTA’s chief executive of Community Tennis.
Tennis promoter Jerry Solomon and a group of financial backers have bought the BB&T Open, the ATP Tour tournament in Atlanta that is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series and played at the end of July. Earlier this year, the same Solomon-led group also acquired the ATP event in Memphis, which is played in February.
ESPN’s first exclusive US Open resulted in the tournament’s biggest TV audience in four years – capped by a Men’s Championship seen by 43 percent more people than last year – plus an explosion of live streaming on WatchESPN. The average audience across two weeks on ESPN and ESPN2 was 1,265,000 viewers (P2+), up 20 percent compared to 1,054,000 a year ago with a combination of cable and broadcast telecasts, according to Nielsen. It was the most-viewed US Open since 2011 (1,443,000).
In a special ceremony on Sept. 9 at the US Open, the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) honored former Hall of Fame CEO Mark L. Stenning by presentation of the 2015 Golden Achievement Award. The Golden Achievement Award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions internationally to tennis in the fields of administration, promotion, or education, and who has devoted long and outstanding service to the sport.
