When International Tennis Federation President David Haggerty was inducted into the Tennis Industry Hall of Fame on Aug. 28 in New York City, during the TIA’s annual Tennis Forum, the audience was treated to a short video showing some of the many tennis scene’s in Haggerty’s life and career. Arguments over line calls are the bane of tennis players everywhere, and often a major cause of headaches for parents, tournament directors and tennis facility staff. But now, a new device by inventor Grégoire Gentil may help bring order to the court. Called “In/Out” (www.inout.tennis), this small, $199 unit attaches to any netpost, on any type of court, and detects whether balls are in or out.
The city of Chicago will host the second edition of the Laver Cup next year, at the world famous United Center. The inaugural event in Prague Sept. 22-24 thrilled tennis fans around the world and Team Europe enjoyed incredible home support in beating Team World, 15-9. Team World will have the home court advantage come September 2018 and will count on the energy of the passionate Chicago sports fans.
In a study of TV viewership of sports in 10 countries by Ampere Analysis, there is a troublesome trend: 18-24 year olds around the world, especially in the U.S., are not watching sports on TV. In the U.S., the drop is 45% versus the national average. Globally, eight of 10 countries have seen drops. The UK was the closest to the U.S. in the fallout, with a 34% drop. ATP and ATP Media announced that Amazon Prime Video is now an official streaming partner of the ATP World Tour. The new deal covers the worldwide distribution of the Next Gen ATP Finals through Amazon Prime Video.
To help get more Americans physically active, PHIT America is launching PHIT America Month. This national event will promote and encourage millions of Americans to Get Moving in May 2018, while growing sports and fitness participation. PHIT America and more than 100 corporate sponsors, sports celebrities, plus thousands of local supporters are expected to offer hundreds of ways for Americans to Get Moving, including participation in local events. PHIT America Month is open to all Americans and most of the programs offered will be free.
Lacoste has agreed to acquire French racquet and string manufacturer Tecnifibre. The purchase price was undisclosed. Lacoste will acquire an 80 percent stake and the deal is expected to close in October.
