Tennis Night in America & World Tennis Day set for March 4

March 4, 2013, will be an important day for tennis and the tennis industry across the globe. Some of the greatest champions in the game will take to the court during the BNP Paribas Showdowns in New York City and Hong Kong for a night of exciting tennis. The Showdown in NY will kick off the USTA's "Tennis Night in America," and StarGames Inc, the producers of the BNP Paribas Showdowns, has partnered with the International Tennis Federation to designate March 4 as "World Tennis Day" across the globe.

Each year, Tennis Night in America and the BNP Paribas Showdown serve as a launching pad for the U.S. tennis season and for one the U.S. Tennis Association's efforts to increase participation by encouraging tennis facilities and programs across the country to host youth registration events, Kids Tennis Clubs, and Tennis Play Days. TV spots encouraging consumers to get out and play will be run during the broadcast of the BNP Paribas Showdown. In addition, commentary throughout the event will focus on the message of growing tennis in America and getting more people into the sport of a lifetime.

Tennis Night in America will also start off the USTA's month-long drive to encourage tennis organizers and providers across the country to register to host a Tennis Festival. Consumer traffic to find these programs will be driven through the website.

"Tennis Night in America is the perfect venue to kick off our latest youth registration efforts," says Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. "The night is sure to generate momentum for youth tennis and create excitement for spring and summer programs at facilities nationwide."

Competing in this year's BNP Paribas Showdown, which is being held at NYC's Madison Square Garden for the sixth consecutive year, are Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin Del Potro, Serena Williams, and Victoria Azarenka.

In an effort to grow and promote tennis around the world, the ITF entered into an agreement with StarGames to launch World Tennis Day. Highlighting World Tennis Day in the Eastern Hemisphere will be the BNP Paribas Showdown in Hong Kong, which will feature Asia's first grand slam champion, Li Na; Carolina Wozniacki;  Ivan Lendl; and John McEnroe. In addition to the Showdown in Hong Kong, other high profile exhibition events held across the globe will feature demonstrations of the ITF's Tennis10s program, which is similar to the demonstrations that will be held in the U.S. with the USTA's 10 and Under Tennis.

"We look forward to World Tennis Day as a way to put a spotlight on tennis participation," says ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. "The very successful Tennis Night in America, staged by the USTA in association with StarGames, is an example of how special events and participation activities can be combined successfully. We look forward to events around the world over the next few years, and to see our 210-member national associations get behind World Tennis Day with activities in their own countries on that day."
