and network opportunities for the industry through two new industry events, technology enhancements
to PlayTennis.com and campaigns with our partners– ReString for Spring, Tennis Tune UP and Try Tennis Free.

An Update on TIA Research

  • TIA's annual Economic Index, approximately $5.55 Billion, relatively flat from the previous year.
    On a positive note, the trade did see upticks in terms of total participation and frequent participation in both of its annual participation studies.
  • The annual USTA/TIA Participation study showed an overall increase in participation of 5.5% and an increase in frequent play (those who play 21+ times a year or more) of 3%.
  • The annual Physical Activity Council's Sports, Fitness, and Recreation Participation Study showed an increase of total participation of 4% and an increase of 9% in total participation of the TIA managed Cardio Tennis program.
  • TIA State of the Industry, is currently in development and is projected for a release in early May.
  • The Cost of Doing Business research study for facilities is set for publication in late April 2014.

The TIA is continuing to work closely with industry manufacturers as well as the ITF on a Global Tennis Marketplace Reporting effort, an unprecedented collaborative effort in the sports and sporting goods industries. This effort is aimed at tracking wholesale shipments of racquets, balls, and strings in over two-dozen countries while also tracking tennis participation in 20 different nations.

Future of Tennis Summit | March 11-12, 2014 | Indian Wells, CA (Click Here to Read Recap)
Held during the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, CA at the Renaissance Esmeralda Indian Wells Resort and Spa, the inaugural "Future of Tennis Summit" welcomed nearly 200 industry executives and leaders for two day discussion on the industry's path to "Vision 2020," reaching 10 million frequent players by the year 2020. Topics of conversation included growing the youth player base, the aging demographic of tennis players, how to better engage adults, using technology in the industry and more. 98% of respondents in a follow up survey would like to see a continuation of the Summit.

Tennis Owners & Managers Conference | April 3-4 | Charleston, SC (Click Here to Read Recap)

A capacity crowd of more than 100 tennis facility owners and managers attended the 2014 T.O.M. Conference, which was held at the Charleston Marriott. They heard from speakers and panelists that included top executives at national tennis and health companies, successful tennis club owners, experts in legal and financial matters, a promotion expert, a retail consultant, club membership and compensation experts, tennis programming and coaching professionals, sports research experts, and more. 96% of attendees indicated they'd be "likely" or "very likely" to attend a future T.O.M. Conference and over 95% indicated they would recommend other facility owners and managers to attend a future conference.

PlayTennis.com Update
2014 has been very progressive in terms of development of the PlayTennis.com website, which is managed by the TIA. All of the consumer search features have been enhanced for a better user experience across all digital platforms, including smart-phones, tablets, and PCs. In early 2014 a new feature allowing consumers to sign up on PlayTennis.com via their Facebook account was added, making it easier for consumers to connect with others.  Through the end of the first quarter, more than 600 prizes (including gear such as racquets and strings, apparel, and U.S. Open tickets generously supplied by TIA partners) have been awarded to 20,000 registered players and more than 120,000 unique visitors in first quarter.  PR campaigns and Social media with partners continue efforts to drive effort.  PlayTennis.com currently contains data and information from more than 384,000 tennis players, 15,400 tennis facilities with nearly 100,000 tennis courts, more than 8,600 tennis professionals, and nearly 7,000 tennis retailers. Much of the data is accessible to consumers through search functions. 

  • Partnerships have been established with SaaS Partners (see below) that will allow their clients (clubs, facilities, etc.) to select tennis information such as programs and events that can be published automatically on the PlayTennis.com website broadening the experience for users.
  • Additionally a unique partnership was established with NSSA – National Sportswriters and Sports Broadcasters Association to encourage recreational tennis coverage in the media.
     
  • "Restring for Spring" campaign launched in early March with a new "Find-a-Stringer" search function as part of the broader "Tennis Tune-Up" effort. Tennis Tune-Up and "Restring for Spring", a joint effort between the USRSA, TIA, and industry manufacturers, is aimed at creating more awareness among the tennis playing population and the general public about the importance of restringing and using certified stringers for those services. This effort has received broad industry support, including appearances across social media channels and in The Media Company's popular "Tennis Tuesday" digital weekly publication.

  • Try Tennis Free Promotion (Click Here to Learn more About Try Tennis Free)

Throughout the first quarter the TIA has been working closely with our various industry partners to develop a "Try Tennis Free" promotion, which is set to kick off May 2014. To be held conjunction with the USPTA's Tennis Across America and the PTR, the  "Try Tennis Free Promotion" is being launched to get more players on the court and into the game. Industry research shows that 65% of players who begin tennis in introductory programming continue with the sport!  Tennis facilities and certified tennis professionals are encouraged to participate by signing up at PlayTennis.com and offering a free introductory program, such as a PlayDay, Cardio Tennis, etc. to new and returning tennis players

  • TIA SaaS Partner Program  (Click here to see full info)
    Launched at the beginning of 2014, TIA SaaS Business Partners program is comprised of development companies who provide "Software as a Service" to help tennis providers manage and grow their businesses. Approved TIA SaaS Business Partners have an opportunity to become part of the family of Tennis Industry Recommended Software and Business Solutions and tie-in their services to help grow engagement with PlayTennis.com.  The TIA reviews the offerings of TIA SaaS partners closely and evaluates them on services ranging from membership management, communication, online court reservations, website development, support, and more.

The Tennis Show 2014 – Sunday, August 24th, Grand Hyatt, NYC

The TIA will manage the 2014 Tennis Show held in conjunction with the Tennis Teachers Conference.  This event will highlight the latest equipment and technology, the TIA Forum, cocktail party, DJ, prize giveaways, etc.
