While wholesale equipment shipments for the fourth quarter of 2017 ended on a positive note for tennis balls, racquets and strings, year-end shipments in all categories remained down, according to marketplace research results from the Tennis Industry Association.
In Q4 2017, ball unit shipments were up 11.8% compared to Q4 of 2016. However, total year-end unit shipments were 2.3% lower than the previous year.
Wholesale racquet unit shipments improved 5.3% in Q4 2017 compared to the same period in 2016. For the year, however, racquet unit shipments dropped by 7.2% while the average price of a frame increased by 4.3%. Youth tennis racquets showed a 10.9% increase in unit shipments for Q4, although the year-end total was down 10.2% from 2016.
String unit shipments for 2017 Q4 increased 3.3% compared to the last three months of 2016, but again, for the full-year, units overall declined by 9.1%.
