MSG Plus and ESPN2 will televise the 2010 BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean Cup live on March 1. The one-day, single-elimination tournament will include four of the world’s top female tennis players – Svetlana Kuznetova, Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Ana Ivanovic – at Madison Square Garden.

USTA Central Arizona Hosts QuickStart Tennis Carnival

USTA Central Arizona hosted its season-ending QuickStart Tennis Carnival for the children of the Washington and Madison School Districts in December at the Gold Key Racquet Club. The kids who played in the QuickStart Carnival had all participated in the USTA Central Arizona After Schools Tennis Program last fall.

Racquet Sales Start to Turn Upward at End of Year

While 2009 racquet shipments showed an overall decline for the year, there is a bright spot, as fourth-quarter sales numbers from pro/specialty moved upward, ahead of the fourth quarter in 2008. Fourth-quarter comparisons show racquet sales at pro/specialty stores increased in 2009 by 3% (for both units and dollars) relative to 2008.

2 Colleges Add Varsity Tennis; BJK Narrates Advocacy Videos

January started on a nice note for college tennis, as Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., recently added men’s and women’s varsity programs, and Edgewood College in Madison, Wis., added men’s varsity. But the Intercollegiate Tennis Association says advocacy remains a priority to help existing programs that may be in jeopardy.
