Millions in Federal ‘PEP’ Funds Available to Tennis Facilities

Each year, the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) awards millions of dollars to schools and community-based organizations to initiate, expand, and improve physical education programs. Your local tennis facility could work with a school or schools in your community and receive an amount ranging from $100,000 to $750,000.

Funding Available for Permanent QuickStart Tennis Lines

The U.S. Tennis Association is offering funding assistance to tennis facilities and organizations looking to paint permanent lines for 36- and 60-foot QuickStart Tennis courts, designed for children 10 and under. The funding assistance—50% of the cost of the lines—is offered through the USTA’s Facility Assistance Services.

65% of New Players Continue in Follow-Up Programs

Sixty-five percent of new and beginning players continued in follow-up tennis programming in 2009, according to the TIA’s most recent Cost of Doing Business–Facilities report. The nearly two-thirds retention rate is in line with similar rates from 2007 and 2005.

The bi-annual report provides a method for facilities to measure their performance against industry averages.

TWC of the Month: Arlington Tennis Center in Texas

The Arlington Tennis Center in Texas first became a Tennis Welcome Center in 2006. “The TWC initiative was new, and indications were that it was going to be a prime means to grow tennis in our community,” says ATC Facility Manager Sheryl Osborn.

Tennis Welcome Center of the Month: Sportime at Randall’s Island

Sportime at Randall’s Island, located 15 minutes from the US Open site, and the home to the Sportime NY World TeamTennis team featuring John McEnroe, opened its doors in June 2009 and has quickly become one of the largest and most popular tennis complexes in Manhattan. The $16 million facility features 20 courts: 10 Deco-Turf and 10 Har-Tru.
