January started on a nice note for college tennis, as Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., recently added men’s and women’s varsity programs, and Edgewood College in Madison, Wis., added men’s varsity. But the Intercollegiate Tennis Association says advocacy remains a priority to help existing programs that may be in jeopardy.
Also, the USTA, in cooperation with the ITA, produced two advocacy videos, both narrated by Billie Jean King and featuring interviews with Stan Smith, varsity tennis coaches, student-athletes, administrators and USTA leadership.
"Winning with Varsity Tennis—On and Off the Court" is aimed at college and university presidents and highlights the benefits varsity tennis provides to students, the institutions and their surrounding communities and asking for continued support for college varsity tennis on their campuses. The second video, "Empower Yourself and Your Program," is aimed at collegiate varsity tennis coaches to help them ensure the future of their programs. Both videos can be viewed at usta.com.
