3 Finalists Named for ‘Best Tennis Town’

August 23, 2010 · No Comments

Atlanta, Charleston, and Richmond, Va., have been selected as the three finalists in the USTA’s second annual search to determine the winner of the “Best Tennis Town” contest, as determined by nationwide voting. The ultimate winner will be announced during the 2010 US Open.

In addition to the title, the 2010 contest winner will receive a $100,000 grant from the USTA to be used for community-wide tennis programming and facility enhancements. The second- and third-prize winners will receive $50,000 and $25,000, respectively, to be used towards the same purposes.

The search for the 2010 “Best Tennis Town” is the USTA’s second nationwide search to identify the local area—from small, rural towns to large, urban metro areas—that best exemplifies the passion, excitement, spirit and impact that tennis brings to the local level. The inaugural contest winner last year was Midland, Mich.

A total of 82 towns from all over the country submitted entries on www.besttennistown.com. A panel of judges selected 10 communities as finalists, then Atlanta, Charleston and Richmond were chosen as the top three among that group by voting at the website. (The seven “honorable mentions”—Beaverton, Ore.; Clearwater, Fla.; Delray Beach, Fla.; Manchester Center, Vt.; Rome, Ga.; Rosemount, Minn.; and Snow Hill, N.C.—each will receive $2,000 worth of tennis equipment for community use.
