Participating in an internship is one of the best ways for students and young job-seekers to gain experience in the tennis industry. Not only will you learn from actually doing the job, but also you’ll create a network of references to help you in your future career.

The types of internship opportunities in this industry can vary widely. For instance, an intern may spend time on the court assisting in programs and lessons at a facility, or assisting in various administrative tasks at a tennis association/organization. Or, an intern may spend time relating with customers and assisting in the day-to-day operations of a tennis pro shop or retail store. Major manufacturers often have continuing internship programs that provide students “hands-on” experience by working across multiple business units (i.e. marketing, accounting, information technology, human resources, engineering, etc.) during the term of the program. Working in different business units can give interns a complete understanding of how various departments in an organization work toward their own goals to then achieve a unified organizational goal.

The tennis industry is perhaps one of the most cohesive sports industries, with a multitude of organizations working together to accomplish the goals of making tennis an economically viable and sustainable industry. The cohesiveness of the industry is evidenced by the fact that tennis is the fastest growing traditional sport in the United States. As the industry continues to expand and more players take up the game, the demand for qualified young talent will grow.
