PE Programming Correlates to Higher Tennis Participation

May 27, 2010 · 1 Comment

Physical Education programs in schools are having an impact on participation numbers for tennis, according the Physical Activity Council (PAC).

In a report released by the PAC at the 2010 National Health Through Fitness Day, kids who have physical education programs in their schools are 90% more likely to play tennis.  According to the report, kids with no physical education programs had a participation rate in tennis of 5.4%, whereas kids who had physical education programs had an overall participation rate of 10.2% in the sport.

Similarly to kids who have PE programming, adults who had PE in school are also 90% more likely to play tennis today.  For example, the participation rate among adults with no PE programming is 3.7%, compared to a 7.0% participation rate among adults who DID have PE programming in school.

These numbers were compiled by the PAC in an effort to garner support for the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP Bill) in Congress. The PEP program is designed to jumpstart innovative physical education programs in America's schools and community based organizations by awarding competitive grants that are administered by the Department of Education.

My husband and I are grassroots tennis pros in rural Arkansas, we are trying to get this type of funding for QuickStart in the Elementary Schools to introduce tennis for kids who can't afford to play tennis otherwise! We have garnered excitement in these communities with free exhibitions and "Tennis in the Parks" to foster more visibility! We are "volunteer" High School coaches because the schools have no funding! We could use some help for equipment, racquets and shoes, and used tennis clothes for these kids. We have so far reached approximately 100 kids, most have never picked up a racquet!
