QuickStart Tennis Courts Dedicated to Lucy Garvin

May 10, 2010 · No Comments

Four new QuickStart Tennis courts at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C., were dedicated to Lucy Garvin, USTA Chairman of the Board and President. The dedication ceremony took place in April during the Family Circle Cup tournament. The QST courts are adjacent to Match Court 5 at the tennis center.

The QuickStart Tennis format is designed to bring children ages 10 and under into the game utilizing smaller equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring, all tailored to age and size. It is divided into two different levels—ages 8 and under and ages 10 and under. While many facilities, schools and parks use temporary lines for the 36-foot and 60-foot courts that children play on in QuickStart, an increasing number of venues, such as the Family Circle Tennis Center, are permanently lining shorter courts. “This was a total surprise to me,” said Garvin of the dedication at Family Circle. “I’m especially proud to have my name associated with QuickStart Tennis courts, as I sincerely believe that QuickStart is one of the best, most innovative programs our sport has ever had for getting more young people into tennis and building a solid foundation for its continued growth. I’m so honored that this took place in my home state and at a world-class tournament that I’ve loved for 30-plus years. It means so much to me.”

At the QuickStart Tennis courts, Bob Moran, General Manager of the Family Circle Cup, led the dedication, thanking Garvin for all her accomplishments in tennis, especially in South Carolina. Accompanying Moran was Rob Eppelsheimer, Director of Facilities and Tennis Development at the Family Circle Tennis Center and event coordinator for the afternoon.

Dignitaries included Kurt Kamperman, USTA, Kevin Clayton, USTA, Rex Maynard USTA Southern Section President, Paul Pittman, USTA, SC President, along with Dennis Van der Meer, founder PTR, and Leslie Allen, former WTA Tour Pro and Executive Director, Leslie Allen Foundation.

Garvin and her husband, Bob, also an avid tennis player, have two children, both of whom were ranked junior and collegiate players. The Garvins reside in Greer, S.C.
