The 11th National Health Through Fitness Day will be March 10 in Washington, DC, and will include Congressional meetings and lobbying on Capitol Hill. The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association is promoting the event on behalf of the sporting goods industry, with the USTA as the presenting sponsor and the TIA as a supporting sponsor. About 40 companies are also supporting the event.
The event will draw sports celebrities, manufactures, retailers, PE teachers, association leaders and others. Celebrity commitments include football great Herschel Walker, who will chair the event, and golfer Annika Sorenstam. ESPN’s Bonnie Bernstein will emcee the Capitol Hill Reception on March 9.
The day will include meetings with members of Congress to promote two initiatives that will help Americans of all ages adopt more physically active and healthy lifestyles. The Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Bill provides grants to school districts to support innovative phys ed methods, and the PHIT (Personal Health Investment Today) Act encourages improved health through increased physical activity for all Americans by making activities more affordable—through the use of tax incentives.
